Verizon INDYCAR Series
Zach Veach Rebounds for Second Top-10 of Season
TORONTO, Ontario — After a mistake in qualifying, Zach Veach made his way to the front for a top-10 in the Honda Indy Toronto.
Just outside of making it into the second round of qualifying on Saturday, Veach pushed a little harder near the end of session, spinning the car around. He would bring out a yellow flag, which per Verizon IndyCar Series rules saw his fastest lap taken away, dropping him to 22nd on the grid.
“I feel I consistently have the speed to be in the top-10; I’m just behind the eight-ball sometimes, and yesterday was a prime example of wanting it too bad and putting yourself behind,” he told POPULAR OPEN WHEEL.
Veach made it up to his Andretti Autosport team, though, putting together a clean race from start to the checkered flag on Sunday, making up ground as he capitalized on other driver’s mistakes en route to a seventh-place finish.
“A lot of things fell in the right way,” the rookie said. “My pit crew did an amazing job on the stops; they were all super quick. My engineer made all the right calls on dialing the car in as the car went in, and I made sure to have a mistake-free day. Everything just kind of lined up for us.”
The American will carry the momentum into Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course where he hopes to score his third career Verizon IndyCar Series top-10 finish. He was strong there in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tire competition, scoring a top-five in each of his five appearances, including a podium in 2014.
“Hopefully we have another day like this,” Veach said.
