Tatiana Calderon Making Moves Towards F1 Career
Although there is belief that a female racing in Formula 1 would not happen, Tatiana Calderon is trying to change the narrative.
The 24-year-old was recently signed by Sauber to be the team’s official test driver, after impressing them in her development role last year.
“This collaboration will build upon the experience that I have gained as Development Driver with the team over the past year,” she said. “I have been able to substantially expand and develop my skills as a race driver and I am convinced that I will be doing so throughout this year.”
The new position will see spend time in the simulator with coaching from the engineers, as well as spending time at the track on various weekends. It will keep her busy as she will also race in GP3 with Jenzer Motorsport.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur added, “Tatiana is a very hard-working person, who has impressed the team with her focus and dedication. She has made good progress as a driver, developing both her mental and physical capacities continuously over the past few years.”
The announcement will send waves through the community, considering the recent comments made by Carmen Jorda. As a member of the FIA Woman in Motorsports Commission, she has repeatedly stated that woman cannot compete against men in Formula 1 at their physical level, even going so far to back a female-only series. The measure has received backlash from many, including notables like Pippa Mann and Jenson Button.
