Sergio Canamasas to run Barcelona for Carlin

Sergio Canamasas will get to run his home race.

Canamasas will drive the No. 18 entry in this weekend’s GP2 season opener at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for Carlin Racing.

The 28-year-old has regularly competed in GP2 over the past few years, scoring his best points finish of 14th in 2014. Canamasas can get the job done, though, as he has three top-five finishes. His best finish at his home is a 13th.

He will join Marvin Kirchhöfer at Carlin as the team announced Kirchhöfer will run the full schedule in 2016. The 21-year-old makes the move up to GP2 after finishing third in the GP3 standings last season with five victories.

“I’m really happy right now to have this opportunity because for a while over the winter I wasn’t sure what I would be doing,” he said. “I’m more than happy and proud to have this opportunity in GP2 with Carlin, a great team that is successful in everything they compete in.  It’s a really big chance for me.  As the last stop before Formula 1, GP2 is a very important championship; with a very powerful car and strategies and pit stops, it will be very interesting.”
