Oliver Askew Heads to Mid-Ohio with Momentum

By  |

TORONTO, Ontario — After not posting a top-five finish since Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May, Oliver Askew was able to pick up a pair of them in the Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Toronto. He finished fourth on Saturday, followed by a runner-up on Sunday.

“Super happy with the weekend,” he told POPULAR OPEN WHEEL. “We weren’t the fastest car on track at the beginning, but the guys made some really great adjustments to the car. We were super fast there in the race. I think we broke the track record, which was a good feeling.”

Racing in the Pro Mazda Championship Powered by Cooper Tires, the rookie hasn’t had much luck with only five top-fives in 11 races.

“It’s great to back on the podium again,” he added. “It’s been a tough season to be honest with a lot of adversity that we’ve had to face. It shows that we’re never giving up and we’re going to get that fast.”

Now moving into the final five races of the year, Askew would like to come away with a top-three finish in the championship standings. He currently fifth, 31 points behind Carlos Cunha.

“I think that’s a realistic goal for us right now to get on the podium for the championship,” he said. “That’d be fantastic. We just have to keep chipping away at it and keep our heads down and work hard. I’m really thankful to have Mazda on board once again; to have the support they’ve given me is an honor. Also Cape Motorsports for always believing in me.”

He will hope to come away from Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course with his first win after picking up a Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda victory there last year.

“I’m looking to build on that experience,” he said. “It’s a track that suits my driving style. Looking forward to that one, and I’m filled with confidence, ready to get back out there and put on a show.”
