Claman De Melo to Run Indianapolis 500
After running the INDYCAR Grand Prix, Zachary Claman De Melo will get another race added to his 2018 schedule, as he will run the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil for Dale Coyne Racing.
“I’m very much looking forward to turning my first laps aboard the No. 19 Paysafe Indy car on the oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” Claman De Melo said. “It’s an iconic venue and I’m extremely fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to drive here. Again, it’s unfortunate that it’s under these circumstances with Pietro’s injuries, so I realize how lucky I am to have this chance.
“I want to thank Dale (Coyne) and Paysafe for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to get on track to complete my rookie orientation program.”
The Canadian substituted for Pietro Fittipaldi in the Grand Prix, scoring a 12th-place finish. Fittipaldi was scheduled to run both races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway until sustaining a broken left leg and broken right ankle in a crash during qualifying for the World Endurance Championship sports car race in Spa, Belgium, on May 4.
This will mark Claman De Melo’s first appearance in the Great Spectacle of Racing, following a 13th and sixth in the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires Freedom 100 at the oval. He got the opportunity to move up to the highest level of American open-wheel racing following a victory at Road America last season in Indy Lights competition. The Indianapolis 500 will mark his sixth Verizon IndyCar Series start.
