ASHLEY ASKS…… Rinus Veekay

After winning the Indy Pro 2000 Championship (then Pro Mazda Championship) presented by Cooper Tires, Rinus Veekay is set for the top step of the Road to Indy, the Indy Lights Series presented by Cooper Tires.

The Juncos Racing driver recently took some time to offer his perspective heading into the season.

POPULAR OPEN WHEEL: What are your thoughts entering the Indy Lights season?

RINUS VEEKAY: I have a good feeling about coming into the Indy Lights season! The pre-season testing so far has been promising and the team does an outstanding job over and over again!

POW: What are your goals and expectations?

ASHLEY MCCUBBIN

RINUS: My goal of course is to win the Indy Lights championship in which, I think, I have a good shot at.

POW: What track are you most looking forward to?

RINUS: I’m most looking forward to St-Pete, because it’s an amazing track and it’s the start of the season. I can’t wait to get the season started!

POW: What is one track that you wish was on the Indy Lights schedule that currently isn’t?

RINUS: That would be Long Beach, which is an amazing track and event!

POW: If you were able to win the title this year and move up to the IndyCar Series, what would that mean to you?

RINUS: If I’d win this year’s Indy Lights championship and advance to the IndyCar Series would mean a lot to me! Advancing to Indycar is what we work for so long. I would be proud to make the IndyCar Series big again in the Netherlands!

POW: As you take a glance back on last season, what did it mean for you to win the Indy Pro 2000 (then Pro Mazda) Championship?

RINUS: It feels great to be the last Pro Mazda champion after they changed the name into Indy Pro 2000! The team and I have worked so extremely hard and it all worked out!

POW: What is the one moment from the 2018 season that stands out in your mind as you reflect back?

RINUS: That’s Toronto. To be back on speed and to win both races was amazing!

POW: We’ve seen a lot of drivers running different cars and series recently. What is a series/type of car that is on your bucket list to one day try?

RINUS: For sure the Indycar is on my bucket list! I get goosebumps every time it drives by!
