ASHLEY ASKS…… Oscar DeLuzuriaga
Following a successful campaign in the Lucas Oil Formula Race Series, it was announced that Oscar DeLuzuriaga would join Newman Wachs Racings for the 2018 Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda campaign.
The 18-year-old recently talked to POPULAR OPEN WHEEL about his thoughts entering his rookie season.
POPULAR OPEN WHEEL: What are your thoughts entering the year?
OSCAR DELUZURIAGA: To be honest, more than anything, I’m just really excited. I think it’s going to be an awesome opportunity for me to get some great experience working with some great professional guys, and professional drivers. More than anything, I’m just excited – new to this, but excited.
POW: What are your goals and expectations?
OSCAR: Well, the goal is obviously to finish as many races as I can, and learn as much as I can from my teammate Darren (Keane), learn as much as I can from my engineer and driver coaches, and make a few new friends along the way. More than anything this year, just learn what I can in preparation for next year where I hopefully I can do something real big with it.
POW: You gotten some time behind the wheel of the USF-17 so far. What has been your biggest takeaway from testing?
OSCAR: I definitely have to learn to trust the car. The car will do what I want it to do. It’s a magnificent piece of machinery. It’s a lot of fun to drive. It really sticks to the ground when you’re at high speed. For the slower stuff, it’s got great mechanical grip. It’s just a real dream to drive.
POW: What track are you most looking forward to?
OSCAR: Either St. Petersburg street race, or Toronto street race.
POW: How did you initially get involved in racing?
OSCAR: I started off in karting. It was more I went karting one day with some friends, and I enjoyed it a little bit more than anybody else did. So pretty simple, I got in contact with a team, asked if I could give their racecars a try, and well, I think I liked it more than my parents sorted of liked me too.
POW: What’s your most memorable career moment to date?
OSCAR: Probably the first time I drove an actual racecar. That was a really, really special moment. That was in England, and it was just really cool.
POW: Who would you consider your racing hero?
OSCAR: Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
