ASHLEY ASKS…… Jack William Miller
After success in the U.S. F4 Championship, Jack William Miller is set to take the next step of young racing career, embarking on the Road to Indy with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda in 2019. The 15-year-old, along with his father, spoke with POPULAR OPEN WHEEL recently, shedding light on their goals and more.
POPULAR OPEN WHEEL: After the Chris Griffis Memorial Test, what are your thoughts on the USF2000 car?
JACK WILLIAM MILLER: Well, I really enjoyed driving the car and I think it’s a lot better than the last car I drove as it’s nicer and faster. I look forward to testing it more at the next test at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
POW: What was the biggest surprise from the test for you?
JWM: Really, just how light the wheel was and how much more the car moved around, and how I could react faster to it, and the power.
POW: Why did you take the Road to Indy and USF2000 as your next step in your young racing career?
JWM: My main goal is to take it to IndyCar, and I think this is the best way to get IndyCar. Many people have done it before, and I think it’s a very professional series. The people involved are very good, and there are a lot of good drivers.
JACK MILLER: I think he also missed touching on the fact that the tracks he will be racing in this Mazda Road to Indy are the same tracks as IndyCar. So he’ll have a few years of getting used to the circuits. We would’ve gone that route right at the beginning, but I think you had to be 14 in order to run to it. They gave Jack a waiver in F4 through the FCCA and he got to start racing when he was 13 in the F4 Series. The Anderson family has been super great with us. The whole series has responded with open-arms and anything we’ve needed, they’ve responded with open arms.
Also, on the safety side of it as a dad that used to drive IndyCars, it’s very important that we have the best safety crew at each race with physicians and the helicopter is there so God forbid someone gets hurt, their chances of survival go up greatly. As a team, it’s been a whole journey putting everything together and we couldn’t be happier right now.
My partner Adam Vinatieri scored the most points in the history of Football this year, so we’re having a good year. Actually, we’ve got another big announcement coming in the next couple of weeks as to who the second driver is, and when we make the announcement, it’ll be good and bring a lot of publicity to the series.
POW: I look forward to hearing who the second driver is when you’re ready for the announcement. Really, for the points you’ve stated, it shows why the Road to Indy is one of the best ladder systems….
JM: Well, I drove Indy Lights and the transition to IndyCar was a piece of cake. In fact, when I got in an IndyCar with the downforce, I was like, ‘Wow, this is nice….’ so the transition was very easy to go from Indy Lights to IndyCars. Hopefully Jack will experience that, which I think he will. We just have to push hard and keep going each year, and we’re in the right direction right now.
POW: Getting back to Jack William Miller right now, what are your goals entering your rookie campaign?
JWM: Hopefully I can do my best and qualify well, and we can go from there.
JM: I think he can finish in the top-10
POW: What track are you most looking forward to?
JWM: Probably racing the Indianapolis road course.
POW: How did you get started in racing?
JWM: I started racing go-karts when I was three, and then I moved on from there, racing go-karts till I was three and then I started racing Formula 4.
POW: What’s been your most memorable racing moment to date?
JWM: I like them all, but probably the first time that I ever got to drive a racecar.
POW: Who is your racing hero?
JWM: Probably Will Power.
POW: If you were able to climb the Road to Indy and race in IndyCar one day, what would that mean to you?
JWM: It’d mean everything. It’s my main goal, and I am hoping to achieve that.
